Cogmed Working Memory Training

Complex Injury Rehab Inc. is pleased to offer an evidenced-based training program that strengthens cognitive function and can lead to better academic and professional performance. Cogmed Working Memory Training is a home based program that increases working memory capacity. It is backed by solid, independent research and has a proven real-life track record to deliver strong and lasting benefits.

What is working memory?

We use working memory in everyday life. It is the cognitive system that gives you the ability to keep information in your mind for a short time, focus on a task and remember what to do next. It is important for school and work performance because it allows you to focus on a task, manipulate information, and remember instructions. Increasing working memory capacity improves attention, which helps to improve academic and professional performance.

Signs of a working memory deficit:

  • Problems focusing
  • Easily distracted
  • Difficulties starting and finishing tasks
  • Forgetting instructions

Benefits of training working memory:

  • Improved ability to sustain attention
  • Improved impulse control
  • Better complex reasoning skills
  • Better academic and professional performance

How can Cogmed help?

Cogmed is a scientifically validated training program for helping children, adolescents and adults improve attention by training their working memory. When you train your working memory, activity in those parts of the brain that are associated with working memory increases (Nature Neuroscience, 2004). Various studies have shown that you can improve your working memory by training it. The improvements translate to other functions that are closely associated with working memory and executive functions.

Improving your working memory can help you to:

  • Remember instructions about what to do next ( i.e. keeping a recipe or driving directions in your head while following through)
  • Keep all the parts of a number in your memory while you calculate it
  • Read and remember what you read
  • Focus on the task at hand, without being distracted by irrelevant stimuli
  • Plan, organize and structure your daily life
  • Mentally go from one thought to another without getting lost

Who is Cogmed training for?

Cogmed training is for people who wish to improve their attention and ability to concentrate. Cogmed users range from young children to senior adults. Some have diagnosed attention deficits, some are living with a brain injury, some would like to slow down the effects of normal aging, and others find they’re not doing as well as they could, academically or professionally.

How the program works:

Cogmed Working Memory Training is a computer-based training program that is delivered in the convenience of your own home, under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist, trained as a qualified Cogmed Coach.

Cogmed Working Memory Training is built around three easy-to-use and age-specific software applications:

1. Cogmed RM is designed for children and adolescents

Working memory is crucial for children and adolescents in school and socially. Reading, solving math problems, planning, and following a conversation all rely on working memory.

2. Cogmed QM is designed for adults

Working memory in adult and professional life is critical for challenges such as starting and finishing tasks, planning next steps, staying focused, resisting distraction, remembering instructions and meeting deadlines.

3. Cogmed JM is for preschoolers from the age of four.

Younger children use their working memory for a number of things, such as focusing on and following instructions, and remaining seated to complete independent activities.

The complete program includes:

  • Initial interview
  • Start-up session
  • 5 weeks of training with weekly coach calls
  • Wrap-up meeting
  • Six month follow-up interview
  • Access to Cogmed Training Web, using a PC or Mac at home.
  • Access to Cogmed Extension Training (12 months)

The software includes different exercises that automatically adjust during the training period. As you improve, the difficulty increases.

25 training sessions of 30-40 minutes each, done over 5 weeks

Supported by an Occupational Therapist, who is a Cogmed Qualified Coach. The Coach leads the training, analyzes results and provides support and encouragement through weekly phone calls.

User/family sets the training schedule with the Cogmed Coach, with plenty of flexibility.

The Cogmed Training Web gives all users online access to their own training results and progress status.

Cogmed Extension Training allows the user to further sharpen the acquired working memory capacity and to verify how the results hold over time.
